Create your own make-up kit

I think we all remember our very first, awkward make-up purchase. Usually it’s a lipgloss or kajal pencil during our teens, when we’re afraid of looking OTT yet we still want that tube of gloss with sparkle the size of discoballs. However, I’ve evolved with time and I have a fair idea of what a make-up kit should and shouldn’t have now.

So for all the beginners out there who are unsure of how to get started with a make-up kit, I’m giving you a budget friendly break down of the things you could start out with.

Cosmetics you need in your makeup-kit

1)  Foundation/ BB Cream

Good make-up begins with flawless skin, and nothing works better to get you that even skintone than a foundation or BB cream (for lighter coverage).

Depending on your skin type, your foundation should either be liquid, or powder based. Liquid, if you’re dry skinned, and powder based if you’re oily skinned. Remember, going for a shade lighter will not make you ‘fairer’. It’ll just make you look chalky and ghastly, so stick with a true match for your skin tone.

If you’re looking for light but even coverage to brighten up your face, I’d say A Benefit Brightening Cream (BB Cream) is for you. It works like a tinted moisturizer and is a easy and quick fix for sheer coverage without feeling like your face is drowning under a cakey layer of foundation and powder.

2)  Concealer

Another vital step to flawless skin; a concealer will help you cover up those sleepless nights and awkward zits leaving smooth, blemish free, skin.

A concealer is incredibly useful when it comes to erasing dark circles and small blemishes. I’m not saying it’ll hide a massive pimple you’ve suddenly developed, but it does hide small imperfections. I personally use it under my eyes and around my mouth to even out the skintone. Just like a foundation, the concealer can also be cream, liquid, stick based or powder based.

3)  Blush

Nothing brightens up your face better than the rosy glow a good blush gives you. Definitely a must have.

A natural, rosy shade is the most covetable when it comes to blush. Depending on the occasion, you can go for shimmer or matte. I’d suggest a pretty peach shade as it looks the most natural yet radiant.

4)  Eyeliner/ Kajal pencil

Personally, I think you should have both as one can’t always replace the other. And this is something you should never be without.

No Indian woman can go without her trusty kajal pencil and a good liquid eyeliner helps create different looks as you can manipulate it the way you want depending on the occasion.

5)  Eyeshadow

Might seem unnecessary initially but you’ll realize how much you need it to brighten up your eyes, even if you’re not fond of dressing up.

It’s a good idea to invest in a neutral eyeshadow palette initially to get a hang of how to use it. Plus, neutral colours always go a long way. Maybelline’s ‘Chai Latte’ quad has been called a good dupe of Urban Decay’s Naked, and fulfils all these requirements.

6)  Lipstick

In a neutral shade and a shade that looks like your lips but better. Definitely a necessity. If you think lipstick is too much, think again. If you go with muted colours and don’t smear on enough to fill a colouring book, it gives a naturally pretty colour to your lips, almost like a lip tint.

A good nude lipstick goes a long way. Invest in non shimmery, moisturizing lipsticks in a good nude shade and a pretty pink. These colours go almost with everything without being too loud and will help you get comfortable with lipsticks.

7)  Mascara

I cannot stress just how important mascara is. You need it. I have days when all I put on my face is mascara and a little bit of blush and it instantly takes all the sleepyness away from your eyes, leaving you good to go.

The one thing I cannot live without. There is nothing that lifts my spirits up more than mascara. It instantly opens your eyes, lengthens your lashes and makes your eyes looks big, bold and beautiful. What’s not to love?

I swear by Maybelline Colossal Volume Express Waterproof Mascara. It’s the best I’ve ever used and is pocket friendly and lasts all day through all my violent eye rubbing.

A year out of school; still a student but also a fashion blogger who spends her days trawling through quotes by Kerouac on Tumblr, finishing assignments while watching endless episodes of Friends, or obscure movies and doodling in the margins. I am slightly obsessed with Ricardo Tisci and (this is a recent development) Raf Simmons, bad music, good books, superhero movies, and Diwali lights. I like to write, I like to read, and most of all I like to write about fashion.

Nice and helpful article really! I’m quite a lazy person and for me it’ a hectic task to assemble so many products and then make a kit of it. Instead I usually prefer a range like Oriflame Studio Artist Range as this is the latest I’m using. I’d love if you review it too.
